"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." - Sir Isaac Newton
On Saturday, October 10th, 2020, session 3 was devoted to the start of the mentoring program for the 2020-2021 HCOP Health Careers Ambassador Program.
We truly believe that our students, with their myriad of experiences, perspectives, and aspirations, are each other's best resource. We strive for our students to build professional connections that will last beyond their HCOP session. In order to facilitate this, the HCOP mentoring program seeks to engage students in group mentoring, with our ten (10) health professional school students acting as mentors and group leaders.
HCOP mentoring has always taken place virtually, which provided a practically seamless transition during this virtual program. Mentors and mentees meet via Zoom or a similar platform to discuss various topics related to attending college and succeeding in the different health careers.
At session 3, HCOP participants were able to learn all about the significance of mentoring from academic success counselor Christina Jelinek. HCOP program supervisor, Aminatu Issaka, went over the "Dos and Don'ts of Mentoring" with the group, outlining the rules for both mentors and mentees. Finally, each mentoring group was able to meet in a breakout room to introduce themselves get to know one another.
Session 3 was a day full of mentoring and meeting new people. In the post-session survey, 97% of participants expressed excitement about participating in mentoring. We, the HCOP staff, are excited too!
