Dressing for Success

Creighton University's Pipeline to Success Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) strives to help students build the skills they will need to succeed in the healthcare workforce. One of the skills we want to build in our students is a knowledge of professionalism, and how to dress professionally. The dress code for all HCOP sessions is business casual. By ensuring that every student has a grasp of what's acceptable as business casual attire, we can help every HCOP participant feel comfortable going into an interview or other professional setting.

What is business casual vs business professional?

There are generally three types of acceptable outfits in a professional setting: Uniforms, Business Professional Attire, and Business Casual Attire. Uniforms, such as scrubs, are only required for some workplaces. Business Professional Attire is what most people envision when they think of a corporate setting: For men, a suit and tie with dress shoes, for women, a skirt- or pants- suit and heels. Business Casual Attire is one step down from this; a professional look but a little more laid-back.

For men, this could be slacks (khaki's, chinos, etc.) and a button-up shirt, sweater, or polo shirt. A tie and jacket are optional.

For ladies, business casual could be dress slacks or a skirt (fingertip-length or longer), flats or other closed-toed shoes, a blouse with no writing on it (solid colors or prints is fine) or a dress.
